I just received my October blocks. WOW!!!
Lee Ann, you are right, there are a lot of talented quilters out there. I really liked the different color combinations that each quilter made. I tell every one I know about this swap and show off every block! I wish I knew more quilters in my area! I am anxiously awaiting the posting of the December block. Til then.....

Hi Ava,

I haven’t had the pleasure of teaching such young children. My girls were not interested; although they loved the clothes & quilts I made them. I have a few ideas, but I’m not sure how helpful they will be. Here goes:

A few minutes spent on “learning your machine” is helpful. I’m sure you have that covered. If you are teaching them sewing, I would recommend something simple to start so they become familiar with patterns, cutting, marking, seam allowances greater than 1/4 inch, hemming and finishing. If your class is comprised of young ladies, perhaps an elastic waistband skirt. Flowing skirts are back in, and elastic is easier than a zipper.

If you are teaching quilting, I taught my neighbors daughter to quilt using charms and other fabric she picked out. We started with a get to know your tools, and safety. We moved to proper cutting and experimented with some awful looking material so she wouldn’t feel bad if she made a mistake. We then laid the blocks out and talked about color, tones, accents, and design. Once she had her blocks laid out; she started with hand sewing a row of blocks, and moved to the sewing machine. Then sandwiching, top stitching using different mediums (pencil, stencil/spray, freehand). From there, you could move to appliqué techniques, quilt art, etc.

Teach patience, and perfection comes with practice. Most of all have fun.

I hope this has helped a little.

Good luck, and let me know how your classes go.

In friendship,

Lee Ann

I'm the queen of procrastination, except when it comes to work. I always have the best intentions to shop early, enjoy the holidays and not rush through them. Where does the time go? It just sneaks up on me.

Congratulations to Rhett for his wonderful accomplishment. The trumpet practice will come in time. I played flute in school and I remember my parents where always trying to get me to practice. Then, one day - I did and I realized I like it. I think the school recital was a major factor!

Cherie,

I'm so glad you like the club. The October blocks were amazing and I can't wait to see November's. We have had 3 new members sign up this week and I can't wait to post the December block that Raylene has chosen.

Happy Stitching

Here we are again at that time of the year with the holidays upon us. Where does the time go??

After having a rocky start at the beginning of the school year, Our grandson, Rhett, (he's 11) has made the honor roll for the 1st marking period. We had almost given up hope on that as he was having such a tough time with Science. But he knuckled down and brought the grades up. Now if I could just get him to practice his trumpet!!!

Happy quilting,

This is great fun! I just sent off Novembers blocks and can't wait to receive Octobers. Doing a block a month, okay, actually 6 blocks, is a neat thing. I am really looking forward to the next one. Thanks Lee Ann, for such an interesting and unique club.

I will be starting a new sewing/quilting class to our afterschool program. I am a quilter and not sure where to start teaching them.
I would appreciate any information or ideas you might have. They are 6-8th graders.
Thanks so much for your help.
